Location: The white wall of the White Cube gallery, Hoxton Square, Chalk Farm, North London, 2006 and 2007
Banksy: “This is a portrait of a maid called Leanne who cleaned my room in a Los Angeles motel. She was quite a feisty lady. In the bad old days, it was only Popes and Princes who had the money to pay for their portraits to be painted.” The gallery let the painting stay for a while but eventually removed it. The Independent newspaper initially claimed that another version of this picture was commissioned by them to appear at the junction of Regents Park Road and Chalk Farm Road. This claim was later withdrawn by the Independent. Banksy commented on his website: "Banksy does not do graffiti commissions for national newspapers and is unlikely to start at any point in the near future.” Another version was also shown at the 2006 Barely Legal Show in Los Angeles.
The image of the maid was also used over another Damien Hirst spot painting (see Painting Rat) and was titled ‘Keep It Spotless’. This piece was part of an auction organised by Damien Hirst and U2 frontman ‘Bono’ on Valentine’s Day, 2008 with the proceeds going to the United Nations Foundation to support HIV/AIDS relief programs in Africa.
